Vale – Denis Almond  FIR

1941 – 2022

Denis trained as a Diagnostic Radiographer at The Royal Adelaide Hospital, graduating in 1960  He joined the Private Practice of Burnard Walker later (renamed as Perret Medical Imaging) in 1970. It was during his time at the Royal Adelaide, that he met Jan who was a Nurse and luckily spent a month in the X-Ray Dept.

A meticulous professional, Denis concentrated on Angiographic and Interventional procedures and was highly regarded by his co-workers and all his colleagues.

Denis was a stalwart of the Sth. Australian Branch of the AIR for his whole career, holding several Committee positions including Treasurer and was the State Branch correspondent for many years. Denis was made a Fellow of the AIR in 1974. He was also a keen Member of several Adelaide Conference planning Committees Together with his delightful and supportive wife Jan, they attended many National and International Conferences including the 1995 ISRRT Centenary of X-rays Congress at The Hague.

Following his retirement at 60 yrs in 2001, Denis and Jan moved to the lovely seaside town of Victor Harbor where Denis and Jan became very involved in the local Probus Clubs, with Denis becoming President of the Granite Island Club. He was also a keen golfer usually playing twice a week at The Victor Harbor Golf Club.

They both enjoyed coming up to Adelaide for our Annual Retired Radiographers and Colleagues Lunch every November and socialising with former friends. Our most recent Lunch on 8th November saw Denis his usual outgoing and bright self. Jan also joined us.

Sadly, Denis passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on 29th November, just 3 weeks after our Lunch.  An event to Celebrate Denis’ life was held on Mon 9th January at his Golf Club, where many local friends and former colleagues had the opportunity to express their sympathy and share fond memories of Denis with Jan and their children Suzanne and Matthew, and grandchildren Noah and Hugo. Denis will be sadly missed by his Family and many friends.
