Primary purpose of the role

ARPANSA is seeking an enthusiastic individual to work as part of a small team of scientists within its Medical Imaging Section to contribute to the development of national diagnostic reference levels (DRLs), evaluate radiation doses, risks and image quality for various imaging modalities, provide scientific input to the processing and issuing of import permits for medical radioisotopes, and assist in the conduct of measurements and tests on medical imaging equipment and accessories.

Key accountabilities:

  • Participate in the performance of an ongoing program of national surveys of diagnostic radiation equipment, dosimetry, and development of diagnostic reference levels, contributing to the design and implementation of surveys, the operation of data collection programs, and the interpretation of results.
  • Provide scientific contributions on matters relating to diagnostic medical imaging, including evaluation of doses to patients, diagnostic reference levels, radiation protection of the patient, suitability of equipment and facility design.
  • Provide scientific input to the processing and issuing of permits for the importation of radioisotopes for use in medical procedures.
  • Interact with professional interest groups, educational institutions and other organisations relating to diagnostic imaging techniques and equipment.
  • Assist with a wide variety of measurements and tests on medical imaging equipment and accessories for calibration, safety assessment, compliance testing and evaluation of new technologies.

Job specific capabilities

To be considered for this position you must possess a degree from an Australian tertiary institution in a branch of the physical sciences, or comparable overseas qualifications, or other alternative qualifications and experience appropriate to the duties.

You should possess qualifications that will entitle membership of the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM) and/or meet the registration requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

You should have a sound knowledge of radiation physics, dosimetry, and the principles of radiation protection in the medical uses of ionising radiation. You should be able to undertake experimental tests of equipment in a laboratory setting and have demonstrated experience and ability in writing scientific and/or technical documents. A good knowledge of medical exposures, patient dosimetry and the risks from low-level radiation exposures are highly desirable. Recent relevant clinical experience is also highly desirable. High level computing, data analysis and statistical skills would be an advantage.

You must hold Australian citizenship or possess permanent residency status leading to citizenship and be prepared to travel interstate from time to time as required. ARPANSA requires all new employees to undertake a baseline security clearance as a condition of engagement.
