Dr Toni Kelly has been a radiation therapist for 28 years and RT educator for 18 years. Toni  completed her PhD in 2022 at The University of Newcastle titled “Communication and Health Literacy Training for Radiation Therapists”. As part of her PhD through research publication, she produced 7 publications; 4 of which are on health literacy education, training, and research for radiation therapists.  As a clinician and educator, Toni sees the impact low health literacy has on a proportion of the cancer patient population and the difficulties patients sometimes have when following important treatment related instructions. Toni is keen to share her learning such that adopting simple communication techniques that may improve patient interactions and actions.  

Program Overview

This will be a hands on virtual workshop requiring participants to learn and practice health literacy techniques. Together, we will cover:

• Background and relevance of health literacy
• Common health literacy tools and other health literacy methods
• Using Plain language with resource creation tips
• The teach back method and practice exercises
• MRS specific practice scenarios
• Benefits and barriers to health literacy
• Resources
