School of Health and Biomedical Sciences

The School of Health and Biomedical Sciences comprises three Academic Clusters (Allied Health, Applied Health, and Biomedical Sciences).  Primarily based at the RMIT Bundoora campus, we undertake teaching and research across ten disciplines: Chinese Medicine, Chiropractic, Exercise Science, Human Biosciences, Laboratory Medicine, Medical Radiations, Nursing, Osteopathy, Pharmacy and Psychology.  Many of our programs include mandatory Clinical Placements/Work Integrated Learning as an intrinsic part of student learning, both through placements in partner industries and through the University’s student led Health Clinic located at Bundoora.

The School’s research was ranked as “well above world standard” in the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) rankings in clinical science, complementary and alternative medicine, medical physiology, microbiology and pharmacology & pharmaceutical sciences, and “above world standard” in psychology, public health & health service and medical & health sciences in 2019.   

We have a strategic focus on healthy ageing, chronic disease and integrative health care and preventive health with cross-cutting themes of: Indigenous Health, Exercise & Nutrition, Ageing in Health & Disease, and Medical Devices, Diagnostics and Prognostics. Research within the School is supported by state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, a comprehensive medical radiations suite with VR simulation and a nuclear medicine laboratory, as well as a significant number of national and international partners.

Medical Imaging is a strategic focus within the school with longstanding industry partners jointly delivering a workforce-ready practitioner workforce for the private and public diagnostic health sector and excellent opportunity to further strengthen the School’s research, community service and industry engagement and to ensure that our graduates are Life and Work Ready in the increasing competitive challenge health and biomedical industry.

About the role

Reporting to the Dean Health and Biomedical Science; the Director will be a professorial academic leader with an outstanding track record of research translation in one of the specialist fields of medical imaging, radiation therapy and nuclear medicine.

As Director you will be contributing significantly to the development of excellent teaching and research outputs, building capability of staff and promoting strong academic performance and exceptional industry engagement. You will lead academic development and stakeholder engagement in the areas of medical imaging, radiation therapy and nuclear medicine and lead the strategic goal of being recognised as a national leader in medical radiations research and education offering applied innovative programs that prepare graduates for new challenges in the field.

As Director you will provide high level academic, engagement and research leadership, developing and leading industry orientated and/or research project teams and programs and fostering a vibrant industry engaged research culture. In your leadership role you will be expected to build and foster a collaborative team culture aligned with the facility operation leading to world class academic and research outcomes in partnership with the health care sector, industry and community.

As the Director, you will be required to develop a high-quality and productivity-driven research network across RMIT and with external national and global partners. You will also make a significant contribution to teaching and learning across disciplines within medical radiations with the aim of providing an excellent student experience. You will make a significant contribution to the planning and strategic direction of the School, taking on major academic leadership roles involving participation in various committees within the School, College and University and external to the University, as appropriate.

Key Selection Criteria

  1. PhD in relevant field of medical imaging, radiation therapy, or nuclear medicine.
  2. Possess an exceptional track record in research translation and industry engagement and leadership in major partnership projects related to the fields of medical imaging, nuclear medicine and radiation therapy and research implementation with a clear focus on community outcomes.
  3. Demonstrated ability to manage award program/s and lead program reviews.
  4. Demonstrate distinction at the national level and an internationally recognised research track record.
  5. Proven ability to sustain and grow Research Groups and Centres through the attraction of external funding.
  6. Extensive experience in attracting and supervising higher degree by research candidates to maximise research performance.
  7. Demonstrated ability to lead improvement of academic standards, including implementing best practice teaching strategies and dissemination of innovative practices.
  8. Evidence of demonstrated strategic leadership in a large organisational unit or University-wide initiative and effective membership of a management team that developed and achieved shared goals and objectives.
  9. Demonstrated experience in financial, governance and quality management systems within a University.
  10. Demonstrated high level of interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills including the ability to consult with senior executives, external bodies, produce executive reports, negotiate agreed directions, outcomes and targets within a collaborative environment.

Mandatory:

A relevant tertiary degree and/or extensive project and administrative expertise in a complex tertiary education or similar service environment.
